The spaghetti is from experience

Tiny Print Farm is a cozy idle game, so we left out most of the waiting. What is still in there is the stuff that really happens when you run a room full of 3D printers. Here is where each piece came from.

Who makes it

Tiny Print Farm is made by Bifrost Manufacturing, a custom and contract manufacturer in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Bifrost does engineering, 3D printing, CNC machining, custom manufacturing, and finishing and post processing. Its projects range from one-off prototypes and tooling to batch production for industrial, aerospace and defense work.

On the printing side that means SLS, DMLS and SLA, FDM with a build envelope of up to 1000mm, and three filament extrusion lines in house. That is a lot more bed than a Bedslinger 3000 has.

In the game, Bifrost is the shop across town. You learned the trade there and ran eleven machines, then quit to run one wobbly printer in your garage. The man who led your cell packed up your bench himself and left it in a box on the step.

Prints fail, and it looks like spaghetti

In the game

A Bedslinger 3000 fails roughly one tugboat in eight before you upgrade anything. The failed print sits on the bed as a tangle of plastic until somebody scrapes it off, and the more carefully you scrape, the more filament you get back.

Every failure still earns a tinker point. The Glue Stick Ritual cuts failures by 30%, a Filament Dry Box shrugs off humid weeks, and a Spaghetti Cam clears a failed bed for you while you are away.

On a real print farm

Real prints fail too. The first layer does not stick, or a part gets knocked loose halfway up, and the printer carries on laying plastic into thin air until someone stops it. What is left on the bed looks a lot like a bowl of spaghetti, which is where the name comes from.

The fixes are the same ones the game gives you: a clean, well prepared bed (sometimes with actual glue stick on it), dry filament, and a camera that watches for failures so a bad print gets stopped early.

The workbench is usually the bottleneck

In the game

Nothing sells straight off the bed. Every print goes over the workbench first, and the bench works at its own pace however many printers you add. The game flags whichever stage is holding the rest up, and it lands on the bench more often than you would like.

The fixes are the real ones too: better tools, bench upgrades, and eventually the neighbor’s kid on weekends, paid in pizza and tugboats.

On a real print farm

Adding printers is the easy part. Every part that comes off a printer still has to be looked at, cleaned up and packed by a person, so ten printers means ten printers’ worth of parts waiting for the same pair of hands.

At Bifrost, finishing and post processing is a service of its own, with tumbling, abrasive blasting, vapor smoothing, powder coat, paint, anodizing and electroplating on the list.

Supports come off, and then you sand

In the game

Every product needs a set amount of bench work: supports off, a sand, a check and a bag. A tugboat barely registers. A full size Space Helmet needs as much bench work as seventy two tugboats.

Proper Flush Cutters make the whole bench 50% faster, because supports snap off like they owe you money.

On a real print farm

Overhangs need supports to print, and supports have to come off. They leave marks, and layer lines show on anything curved. A big cosplay piece can spend longer being sanded, filled and painted than it spent on the printer.

Flush cutters are a standard tool for taking supports off, which is why they are one of the first upgrades in the game.

Bedslinger or enclosed machine

In the game

The Bedslinger 3000 is cheap, loud and a bit wobbly. The Cube X1 is an enclosed CoreXY machine that costs a lot more, prints two and a half times as fast, fails half as often and has a bigger bed. Only the Cube can make the Space Helmet.

It also takes twice the room on the storage shelf, because it is a big box.

On a real print farm

A bed slinger moves the bed, and the print sitting on it, back and forth under the nozzle. That is simple and cheap to build, but the whole part gets shaken around and the moving bed limits how fast it can go. A CoreXY machine moves the print head in both directions with a pair of belts, and in most designs the bed only moves down a layer at a time, so it can run a lot faster.

An enclosure holds the heat in, which matters for materials like ABS and ASA that warp when they cool unevenly. Neither kind is simply better. Plenty of people learn on a bed slinger and keep one running for years.

Buyers have opinions

In the game

Special orders come from buyers with their own tastes. The dentist wants prize box toys with no sharp edges. The library wants its invoice to the cent. Craft fair crowds have favorites, and the seasons move demand around: planters in spring, fidget toys in summer, costumes in fall.

Then there is the note in pencil asking for one little tugboat, set facing the door. The tugboat is the first thing you print because a small boat is one of the best known test prints in 3D printing.

On a real print farm

Sell prints for long enough and you meet all of these people. One customer needs a particular color, another needs it by Friday, and another orders the same small thing again and again and wants it to look exactly like last time.

Custom work comes with rules attached, and getting the rules right is a big part of the job.

What we left out

A tugboat takes ten seconds to print in the game. A real one takes a lot longer. Real farms also spend a good part of the day leveling beds, swapping nozzles, drying filament and arguing about slicer settings, and we squeezed most of that into upgrades you buy once.

It is a cozy game. Nobody wants to sit and watch a bed cool down.
